What's On

Alpha - F.A.Q.s

How long does the course last?
The course lasts for 10 weeks and includes a weekend away.

How much does it cost?
The course is totally free. Sometimes we ask for a donation towards the cost of the weekend away but this is completely voluntary.

Who Pays?
Grace Community Church have funds set aside for Alpha.

Is there a meal every week?
Yes - a 2-course meal will be served every week.

What time will it finish?
We aim to finish each week promptly at 10pm.

Why do people go on Alpha courses?
Lots of reasons. Here are a few. People often don’t say why they want to come to Alpha.

“I’m an ignorant atheist and I want to become an informed atheist.”

“My husband has become a Christian and I want to find out what’s happened to him.”

“I believe in God but I want to know more.”

“I want to know about the Holy Spirit.”

“I feel there’s something missing in my life.”

“I am going to prove you wrong.”

“My sister went on an Alpha course.”

I have specific dietary needs. Do I need to bring my own food?
No. If you tell us what your needs are we will ensure there is a suitable meal available for you each week.

I’m worried that I might not enjoy it.
If you don’t enjoy it don’t come anymore. Having said that, most people who come to the course really enjoy it and don’t want it to end.

Am I going to be hassled by religious people if I change my mind?
In a word – No! We have a strict rule of never pressurising people.

Do I have to go to church?
No. However, most guests choose to at least once during or after the course.

Do I have to take part in discussions?
No. We have a general rule that group leaders don’t direct questions at individuals in a group setting. Obviously the discussion will be very boring if no one takes part. (That’s never happened)

Is there homework to do?
Definitely not. Some guests have written down questions they want to ask next time.

I can’t make it every week. Is that okay?
That’s fine. Though it’s good to get to as much of the course as you can.

Is the course for religious people?
The course is for anyone regardless of whether they consider themselves an atheist or deeply religious.

What will the discussions be about?
Each week there is a DVD that acts as a starter for the discussions. Having said that questions often come up that have no relevance to the DVD. No topic is taboo.

I can’t make it to the first session but want to come to the course. Is that okay?
Yes that’s fine. Please book in to the course and let us know this information.
